Gary Larkin

Associate Director

Over 20 years ago, Gary Larkin started Sandspurs Volleyball, which later incorporated various local clubs before merging with Club Tampa to become TUVA. As a club coach, he earned bids to Junior Nationals in multiple age groups, and he was named USAV Outstanding Coach of the Year. He was named HCC Head Coach in 2003 and is still serving in that position today. He has helped HCC earn 3 FCSAA State Championships, 8  District Championships, 8 bids to the NJCAA Championships, and 7 Suncoast Conference Championship. At the NJCAA Nationals, HCC finished 3rd in 2013 and 2015. In 2019, the team finished 6th and earned the NJCAA National Championships Team Sportsmanship Award. HCC has made the post season 13 of 17 years. He has been named AVCA Two Year College Northeast/Southeast Region Coach of the Year 4x, FCSAA State Coach of the Year 3x, District  Coach of the Year 8x, and Suncoast Conference Coach of the Year 7x. Larkin has coached 7 All-Americans. He is married to Lisa and has two beautiful children, Aidan and Reina.


Sam Cibrone

Associate Director

Sam Cibrone started Club Tampa Volleyball in 1997, which later merged with Sandspurs, and then became TUVA. He has led teams to JOs in various age groups. He was named St. Leo Head Coach in 2004. His honors include Sunshine State Conference championship, 2 Time SSC Coach of the Year honor, 7 NCAA Tournament regional championship appearances and countless All-Conference, All-Region and All-America honors en route to becoming the winningest coach in Saint Leo Volleyball history. Prior to St. Leo, he led PHCC to 4 straight national appearances. While there, he was named District and Conference Coach of the Year ALL 4 seasons. Prior to PHCC, he led Sickles HS in its first ever volleyball season. He also remains active coaching and playing beach volleyball. Sam is married to Jennifer and has two beautiful future volleyballers, Noah and Ella.

Monica Medvid Ewalt

Uniforms Coordinator

Monica Medvid has served as the HCC Volleyball Assistant Coach since 2004, where she has helped the HCC Volleyball Program rise to national prominence including two 3rd place finishes at the NJCAA National Championships. She was named 2-Year National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 and again in 2015. Monica is an HCC Volleyball alumnus and was named Team Captain her sophomore year. In addition, she has been a head coach at both Sandspurs Volleyball Club and Tampa United Volleyball Academy since 2003. She has earned multiple bids to JOs and is one of TUVA’s lead lessons instructors. She is married to Luke Ewalt, and in her spare time, she freelances in photography and wedding planning.

Leanna Taylor

Leanna returned home after a successful stint coaching Queens College in Queens, NY.  Leanna grew up in Tampa and played college volleyball at both Georgia Tech and U.Tampa. She has rebuilt a college program and won high school state championships. Specifically, she led Plant High School to one of its greatest runs in its history. She is currently the Tampa Prep High School Head Coach and ready to start another run of dominance. Leanna is a Tampa girl and has a wonderful husband and 3 amazing children in addition to the many extended family members throughout the Tampa area.

Danielle Priest

Danielle played at Land O’ Lakes High School before attending HCC on scholarship and later FAU. Danielle has also played for the Florida Wave women’s semi-professional team. She has coached at St. Leo University, assisting its indoor and beach teams. She is currently an Assistant Coach at HCC where she earned bids to the NJCAA National Championships as both a player and a coach. Danielle has coached numerous years at TUVA over the years. 

Chris Guerra


Chris has extensive college experience serving Nova Southeastern, St. Leo, and Chowan University. He coached club teams for Florida Suns in Ft. Lauderdale. Chris played collegiately  for Warner Southern University, and he also works with the SSOVA Beach tour and playing on the sand. Chris brings high energy to the gym and is also one of our lead lessons clinicians.

Jenna Kirkwood

Jenna played for HCC, leading the Hawks to the 2012 NJCAA National Championships. She then played for Valdosta State, leading the Blazers to a NCAA post-season berth. Jenna is originally from Pinellas County has taught and coached at Sunlake High School. She has been coaching and mentoring players as a club coach and summer camp staff member since 2012.



Shannon played middle blocker for Tampa United and then went on to play at University of Montevallo. While there, she began coaching at Alabama Juniors. Upon returning to Tampa, she first coached at Thunder Bay before reconnecting with Tampa United. She is currently a TUVA mini-club coach, and we are excited to welcome her home. Shannon is also pursuing an elementary education degree at USF and excited to become a teacher.


Jamee Townsend Marino

Jamee was a TUVA alumna before playing for St. Leo and Cibrone. She became the starting libero and captain while at Leo helping her teams earn post-season bids. She also competed for Leo for a 5th year on the sand team.

Larra Bickelhaupt

Larra comes from Fort Myers where she was named the female athlete of the year in high school. She then played for HCC and Coach Larkin where she earned a trip to the NJCAA National Championships and became a captain and starting libero. After HCC she earned a scholarship to University at Buffalo where she also became a captain and starting libero.  At University at Buffalo, Larra played for Penn State great, Blair Brown Lipsitz. 

Madara Bajare

Coach Mada comes to us by way of Latvia. Mada played for the HCC Hawks before playing for and graduating from Southeast Missouri State University. She has coached 3 seasons of club, and as she settles in the Tampa area, she is happy to rejoin TUVA in 2020.

Kaity Reed

Kaity has vast experience indoor and on the beach. She is a powerful player and a volleyball junky. Originally from Indiana, Kaity came to Florida to play for Southeastern University and recorded 22 kills in her debut. She later went on to play for FGCU's Beach team.

Nicole Higgins

Nicole is the current Head Coach at Durant High School. In her first year, she led the Cougars to the post-season. She had spent 3 seasons as an assistant coach for TUVA before being named a head coach. Nicole is a local girl and TUVA alum who earned scholarships at HCC and then Valdosta State University.
